A motorist who drove with his hands bound together by cable ties for “a laugh” has been given a year-long driving ban.

James Hayter, 22 was stopped by police in Gillingham who found his hands tied to the steering wheel.

When questioned, Hayet admitted that the car was insured in his parents’ names.

Hayter pleading guilty to dangerous driving and driving without insurance at Weymouth Magistrates’ Court.

He was banned from driving for 12 months, received a 170-hour community order and fined £420.

After the sentencing, Sgt Mark Farrow said Hayter’s actions were “foolish and reckless”.

He added: “It is nothing but sheer luck that this mindless prank did not lead to a collision or someone getting injured.”
