Opinion: Why trade shows are a must for independents

For any forward thinking independent garage, trade shows are without doubt a must for garage owners and technicians – and not just for the free breakfast!

Garage owner and GW columnist, Aaron Phillips.

Usually completely free, these exhibitions are the best place to help you succeed in business.

Whether you’re after new equipment, a new service to offer your customers or are just looking for information on the latest innovations, you’ll find everything you need to know at a respected trade show.

I’ve been to many over the years and gained useful information, not only on new products ad services, but on those that I already use too.

Speak to the stall holders and find about upgrades, improvements or replacements for equipment that you already have in your workshop.

It’s a chance to let them know about any issues you have had with their product too.

I recently spoke to an equipment supplier about a niggle I had with their product at a show and the outcome was an immediate fix.

I contacted the guys back at work and the ‘issue’ was sorted there and then!

Tech seminars

Then there’s the technical seminars.

We tend to plan our day around the seminar programme, which is essentially free information from industry experts.

Having listened to a speaker, you’re able to ask questions and visit the speaker’s stand for even great insight.

Being able to compare the vast array of tools and equipment being demonstrated is great, but speaking to the people who know them best, registering interest, booking on-site demonstrations and even purchasing with show discounts are a definite bonus.

Get yourself down to the next trade show – Automechanika Birmingham – and be sure to wear comfortable shoes!
