Findings revealed in an investigation into garage work providers have been published by The Independent Garage Association (IGA).

The 2018 Garage Work Provider Report investigates the wide variety of business models and contractual terms and conditions that consumer work provider websites use.

The IGA said it hopes the report will guide independent garages in the decision-making process when it comes to working with such businesses.

In a press statement, Stuart James, director at the IGA, said: “Many of the work providers featured in this report insert themselves between the customer and the garage, which removes the ability to form that pivotal relationship.

“We know that many independent garages perceive the costs of services provided by these work providers as a form of marketing outlay and understand the reasons why they use them.

“The aim of this report is to provide sufficient information for garage businesses to make an informed decision on which specific provider is best for their business.

“The IGA will continue to listen to its members and survey the marketplace to ensure that garage businesses are not subject to any detriment as a result of working with consumer work providers.

“Continue to engage directly with customers”

“The IGA firmly believes independent garage businesses should continue to engage directly with customers and promote their own brand and image.”

The report concludes: “We remain convinced that any independent garage business that is a member of a CTSI approved consumer code, advertises locally, has a good website and social media presence while providing genuine customer service at good value prices – the hallmarks of a good garage business anyway – will be successful without the need to generate additional work through these work providers.

“However, we are fully aware that many consumers do choose to use these work providers and garages who engage with them may find they can generate additional income from accepting work.

“The important caveat is that it needs to be profitable work.

“After all, nobody wants to be a busy fool.”

I wouldn’t touch any of these firms with a bargepole!
As the article says a good reputable business should be able to generate it’s own customer base. All you’re going to get from one these firms are people looking for the cheapest possible price who will show no loyalty when they next need anything.
