Sharp decline in diesel car sales continues to impact UK new car registrations.

Demand for new cars has continued to fall, according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

Demand for new vehicles has decreased across all areas, as registrations by business (down 29.7 per cent), private (down 9.5 per cent) and fleet buyers (down by 1.8 per cent) all recorded a slump.

While SUVs continue to see growth of 6.6 per cent, accounting for a fifth of all new car registrations, demand across other segments continues to fall.

Despite registrations of petrol and alterntively fuelled vehicles (AFVs) rising, the growth has not been enough to counter-act the signifcant decline in demand for new cars.

Mike Hawres, SMMT chief executive, comments: “The ongoing and substantial decline in new diesel car registrations is concerning, particularly since the evidence indicates consumers and businesses are not switching into alternative technologies, but keeping their older cars running.

“Given fleet renewal is the fastest way to improve air quality and reduce CO2, we need government policy to encourage take up of the latest advanced low emission diesels as, for many drivers, they remain the right choice economically and environmentally.”

The decline in demand for new diesel vehicles, down 25.6 per cent, has been blamed on continued confusion over government policy.

People are quite able to make their own minds up about diesel. What people cannot get their heads around are the changes to the Road Tax (VED) regime. With legally-binding climate change obligations to meet, it is simply crazy for the government to have abandoned heavy rates of tax on large gas-guzzling vehicles, whilst at the same time dramatically increasing the annual bill for the least polluting vehicles.
