Air conditioning service unit manufacturer, Dometic has aired concerns that some garages are being offered service units that fail to meet the technical requirements for use with R1234yf.
To help technicians with their understanding of R1234yf, Dometic has published a list of tips to help.
What you need to know about R1234yf service units
- R 1234yf service units are subject to special safety regulations. The refrigerant must not escape into the atmosphere; the WAECO ASC 5500 G RPA automatically performs a leak check at regular intervals ensuring that potential minor leaks in the system will not remain undetected.
- Workshops are most likely going to have two different air conditioning service units in the future, because R134a and R1234yf are not compatible with each other. The differences between the units should be clearly visible to avoid confusion.
- R 1234yf is sensitive to cross contamination with other refrigerants. It is mandatory to use analysis equipment to check the refrigerant purity. You can save time if the analysis tool is already integrated in the service unit, and it’s safer as the analysis is always done automatically.
- The low-emission technology prevents workshop staff from being exposed to illegally high concentrations of R1234yf.
- R 1234yf is inflammable under certain conditions; therefore, the system start will only activate the external fan at first. After the fan has been running for 35 seconds, the voltage is passed on to the system, this guarantees there’s no inflammable mixture contained in the system when the electrical components are enabled.
- It’s not enough to have a service unit and maintain a stock of refrigerant. A good supplier will also provide all the consumables required for air conditioning service, such as oils and leak detection additives. PAG oils and ester oils for R134a are not suitable for use in R1234yf systems.
- It’s expected that the price for R1234yf will be considerably higher than that for R134a.
