Technicians told to be wary of starting engine after new water pump fitment

Gates is warning technicians to beware of starting up the engine immediately after fitting a new water pump.

A Gates spokesperson said: “Never dry run a water pump, not even for a few seconds.

“Dry running can permanently damage it.”

It’s one of the most common mistakes that technicians make, according to Gates.

Starting the engine or revving it up with a newly installed dry water pump can permanently damage the rings of the mechanical seal, leading to premature noise and/or coolant leakage.

The spokesperson added: “It’s wiser to rotate a newly installed water pump manually, about ten times, after refilling the system.

“This rotating movement causes coolant to be sucked into the mechanical seal component, effectively creating a film.

“This keeps coolant from spilling out. It avoids damage to the pump.”

Gates always advises a complete system flush before installing the water pump and adds that sealant must only ever be used if specified by the manufacturer.
