Everything you need to know about towbars

Bosal provides a basic guide and explains how garages can benefit from fitting towballs

Everything you need to know about towbars
Up until the early 1990s, there was only one type of towbar available in the UK. Nowadays, towbars come in many different types to suit all vehicle makes and models.

Enjoying a surge in popularity due to consumer lifestyle and commercial demands, towbars, along with their narrow profit margins, offer garages and workshops a golden business opportunity.

Fixed Towbars are the most popular choice among motorists in the UK.

This specific type of towbar is particularly designed for frequent use, and is guaranteed to function through a long and demanding life while being functional and easy to fit, offering excellent value for money.

There are three different kinds of towballs available; welded (where the towball is welded to the subframe and is not removable); bolt-on (where the towball is integral with the car but can be removed with the right tools); flange ball (suitable for heavy-duty towing and ideal for commercial and off-road vehicles.

The design is compatible with two, and four, hole fixings depending on vehicle type.

Detachable Towbars

Detachable towbars can easily be removed when not required for use.

Detachable towbar systems also offer practical advantages; for example they do not obscure low mounted number plates or catch on clothing when not in use.

They are as strong as fixed towbars, are able to tow the same capacity and won’t trigger reversing sensors when not towing.

Retractable Towbars

The latest type of towbar is the retractable towbar, which provides the same advantages as the detachable towbar, but with additional benefits.

With the external operating lever concealed under the bumper, the towball can be swivelled out of sight in less than two seconds.

An added advantage is that the fitting time is the same as a detachable or a fixed towball.

Karl Ridings, sales director at Bosal Automotive & Industrial Components said: “Towbars present an ideal upsell opportunity for garages.

“What we would recommend first is that all fitters are NTTA-approved, as Bosal is, in order to provide and fit fully type approved OE towbars.”

The Bosal Lightmate: reliability in a box

After connecting a towbar and wiring kit, carrying out a light function check is essential.

The Bosal Lightmate (Part No. 023-844) checks the safety and function of all modern vehicles and trailers, providing a compact device that not only meets the highest stringent testing requirements but is also simple for both garages and motorists to use.

The advanced Bosal Lightmate can simulate any detection and power drop, simplifying the problem search and helping to identify any system malfunction.

It can also carry out light checks on older trailers and caravans with higher voltage drop.
