Ford Mondeo could be axed as carmaker suggests focus on SUVs

Ford is facing mounting speculation that it is considering plans to scrap its Mondeo range in favour of sports utility vehicles and cut up to 24,000 workers.

The future of its Galaxy and S-Max models is also uncertain, reports suggest.

Analysts from Morgan Stanley last weekend said the company could cut up to 12 per cent of its global workforce of 200,000.

Ford Europe president Steven Armstrong said: “The majority of our volume, revenue and capital deployment is in low-performing cars and multi-activity vehicles.

“We are focused on aggressively attacking costs, implementing facility and product programme efficiencies to lower product and material cost, as well as capital intensity in Europe.”

Addressing the Mondeo rumours, Ford has said it plans to go ahead with a scheduled facelift later this year but questions remain with regard to whether it will be replaced in the longer term.
