Software system provider celebrates ten years of business
The GDS workshop management system is a sales and accounts solution for independent repair workshops.

Written by Garage Data Systems (GDS) founder, Paul Setterfield, for a long established Cleethorpes garage, the GDS workshop manager system was based on the design of a popular legacy DOS/character based system called Garage Master.

A GDS spokesperson told GW: “In 2006 the DOS Garage Master system had not been updated for many years, and the company behind the system, Exford Systems, was no longer in the workshop software business, having sold their software to Unipart who very quickly superseded it with something very different; Unipart KiS.

“As most businesses know, it’s important not to let critical systems and processes become out of date and unsupported by their developers.

“Enquiries for the new product came in regularly once our Google Ads campaign started, and one of our unique selling points of visiting customers at their premises to do an on site demonstration of the system, set us apart from the competition.

User growth

“Saying yes to the initial requests for features and enhancements, and taking on the jobs of migrating service history and accounts data from existing systems, saw customer numbers growing on a regular basis.”

Key developments in the history of the GDS product include the multi-branch and multi-site links, a ‘marketing module’ which can email and send text messages to customers, a SageLink module and a ‘vehicle sales’ Module.

Automated vehicle lookup systems and Royal Mail postcode address lookup are also integrated.

A good price point, a growing product range, and a large range of features has seen GDS win a large customer base in the UK with more than 1,700 customers.

GDS offer onsite demonstrations and installations and now migrates data from more than ten existing workshop systems.
