Health service call to garages as winter approaches

Corteco urges garages to 'go the extra mile' and help improve interior air quality inside more customers’ cars

Health service call to garages as winter approaches
Corteco say workshops should do more to help improve the quality of air inside vehicles, despite a degree of difficulty.

The micronAir cabin filter supplier to the UK and Ireland acknowledges that although these components are not always replaced at every annual service, some vehicle drivers are more exposed to in-car vehicle pollution than others through vehicle design.

Corteco marketing manager, Steve Jarnet explains: “For example, Corteco supplies an activated carbon upgrade to the standard issue cabin filter on Ford Fiesta’s from 2008 onward.

“It’s a cabin filter usually located inside the vehicle on the passenger side of the centre console, just above floor level.

“It’s a ten minute job to replace, involving five screws and two clips, but as it requires glove box removal, it frequently goes unchanged.”

Other cars in the UK car parc are known to have similar issues that discourage cabin filter replacement.

Passenger health risks

Corteco says older cabin filters raise passenger health risks and there is evidence that the quality of air inside cars can be up to six times worse than it is outside, at the roadside.

Regular exposure on long or short journeys can exacerbate existing health conditions such as asthma or heart disease.

Clogged cabin filters are also a hazard to health because they lose their demisting capacity, impair visibility and increase road safety risks to other road users.

It’s also worth pointing out that unchanged cabin filters force HVAC units to work harder for less reward, which can shorten their operational life, says the supplier.

Regularly replaced and especially when upgraded with activated carbon options, cabin filters give added protection from road and air pollutants, reduce exposure to harmful gases and unpleasant smells.

“They also contribute additional revenue on top of the menu service price, while scoring very well on customer satisfaction surveys,” adds Steve Jarnet.
