More than 95 per cent of the UK diesel market is now turbocharged and last year’s new registration figures show that around half of new petrol engines were equipped with a turbo.
Technological enhancements have seen the turbocharger come a long way over the years.
According to BTN Turbo, over 80 per cent of diesel passenger car turbos now feature variable vane technology (VNT), which ensures the turbo is fully optimised across the engine range.
These turbos spin at more than 4,000 revs a second and operate at temperatures in excess of 900 degrees.
If you thought those stats were big, the new generation of petrol turbos run even hotter at more than 1000 degrees, spinning at over 6,000 rev a second.
But how did we get to where we are today and what will the future hold for the market?
