MOT failures: The worst SUVs and 4x4s revealed
The BMX X5 is number one on the top ten list of worst SUVS and 4x4s for MOT failures.

SUVs and 4x4s have grown in popularity and there is now a wide choice of makes and models on offer, with prices ranging from a few thousand pounds to over £80,000, for a used SUV or 4×4.

MyCarNeedsA.com, a price comparison site where service providers quote for MOT, has analysed a total of 29,640,484 MOT records from the DVSA to reveal the top ten worst and best 4x4s and SUVs.

The pass rate was analysed for the UK’s 4x4s and SUVS on their first MOT in 2015.

Scott Hamilton, managing director of MyCarNeedsA.com, said: “It’s tough for car buyers to decide which model to invest in, but our analysis of MOT pass rates gives an indication of the reliability of different makes and models.

“The MOT results show that Japanese and German manufacturers dominate the top 4x4s and SUVs, with the Audi Q3 in pole position, scoring an impressive 92.11 per cent pass rate.

“In second place, the Lexus RX450H puts in a strong performance of 91 per cent.

“Sitting close behind in third position, is the Volkswagen Toureg with a score of 90.51.

“The bottom ten is a mixed bag with Toyota, BMW, Land Rover, Hyundai, Peugeot, Nissan and Fiat all making an appearance.

“However, it’s great to see that Range Rover has improved its pass rates, jumping from 82.2 per cent to 83.57 per cent over the last three years.

Failure reasons

“The good news is that our research shows the majority of MOT failures were down to lights, indicators and tyres.

“These are the type of faults that can be fixed quickly and cheaply by motorists, before they book their vehicle in for an MOT.

“This will help motorists save money and improve the chance of their vehicle passing its MOT.”
