New questions cover the basics of car maintenance but is two questions enough?

Are these new “show me, tell me” driving test questions up to scratch?
Driving examiners will soon ask learners two new vehicle safety questions, known as the "show me, tell me" questions, during the driving test.

Changes to the driving test will come into force from December 4, 2017 with the introduction of new “show me, tell me” questions covering the basics of vehicle safety.

As well as changes to the independent driving part of the test, following sat nav directions and reversing manoeuvres, the test will now include new “show me, tell me” questions.

Driving examiners will ask learners one “tell me” question, where learners should explain how to carry out a safety task, and one “show me” question, where learners must show the examiner how to carry out a safety task.

Vehicle safety

The changes are being made in a bid to reduce the number of road collisions involving young people.

DVSA chief executive, Gareth Llewellyn, said: “Making sure the driving test better assesses a driver’s ability to drive safely and independently is part of our strategy to help you stay safe on Britain’s roads.

“It’s vital that the driving test keeps up to date with new vehicle technology and the areas where new drivers face the greatest risk once they’ve passed their test.”
