Problem job: Volkswagen Toureg loses engine power

Diagnostic tool points to air mass sensor fault but investigation reveals air supply system to blame

Problem job: Volkswagen Toureg loses engine power

A  2008 Volkswagen Toureg with a loss of engine power and poor acceleration was believed to be experiencing an air flow circuit malfunction, however after replacing the air mass sensor the warning light still appeared on the dashboard and the symptoms were still occurring.

After further investigation into the system, it was discovered that the turbo actuator was intermittently malfunctioning, causing the same symptoms that a faulty air mass sensor would experience.

To rectify the situation, the actuator was replaced in order to prevent the fault becoming permanent over time.

Cambiare says that as the VAG TDI engines rely heavily on the turbo at low-revs the part is more likely to become worn over time, but checking that all turbo air pipes are clean and free from any kinks and clogging will ensure the turbo isn’t put under any more pressure than needed.
