Regulation to make it mandatory for workshops to show tyre labels to customers at point of sale

Proposed new European Union tyre rules could see costs soar, Brexiteers warn
Image: Bigstock. While the UK is due to exit the EU next year, British drivers could still be affected by the change because Brussels regulations are due to remain in force after Brexit under Theresa May's plans.

EU chiefs have proposed new regulations to ensure all new tyres fitted to vehicles on public roads are printed with information about their fuel efficiency, safety and noise standards.

The new rules would replace existing regulation on the labelling of tyres and could come into force as soon as 2020 if agreed by MEPs.

The RAC has backed the new labelling system.

RAC spokesman Simon Williams said: “Strengthening the tyre labelling regulations is good news for UK motorists and road safety generally.

“Currently, there is no requirement for tyre fitters to show labels at the point of purchase so motorists are oblivious to the pros and cons of the tyres they are buying.

“As a result few motorists are shown the labels when buying tyres, leaving them completely in the dark about the three ratings of fuel efficiency, wet grip and passing noise.

“Updating the regulations should fix this by making it mandatory for tyre labels to be shown to motorists in all situations.

“Information on tyres’ snow and ice performance is going to be included which will be very beneficial.

“The labels are also being future-proofed as the amended regulations allow for the addition of other useful information such as ratings for mileage, wear and a potential indication for re-treaded tyres.”

Increased production and design costs

However, campaigners claim the move could add up to £15 to the price of a tyre for a middle-range family saloon through increased production and design costs.

Jayne Adye, director of Get Britain Out, said: “This proposed EU regulation demonstrates how out of touch the European Commission is with the real world.

“Whilst it may look good on paper over in Brussels, this regulation would harm British motorists and farmers burdened with extra costs.

“There are many pieces of legislation, such as this one, which are set to come into force before December 2020 and the end of the Brexit transition period.

“It is imperative we leave as soon as possible to avoid such red tape entering our statute book.

“Red tape”

“The Commission has no intention of stopping with this piece of regulation.

“It intends to continue increasing legislation which inflicts greater costs on manufacturers who are then forced to comply, or go bust.

“Once we get Britain out of the EU, our government will have the necessary agility to promote energy efficiency, whilst simultaneously taking the side of the British motorist and our farmers.

“The EU is effectively telling us we cannot be trusted as consumers to make the right decision when we buy new products.

“Instead, they intend to take more and more control of our lives, making decisions on our behalf, telling us exactly which tyres are good and which are bad.

“It is outrageous.”

Change of rules again on new tyres , what about the millions of part worn rubbish bought every year by motorists ? most fast fit sites like ours the information is printed on the receipt . Forget trying to squeeze more from legit business people and making them do things start with PART WORN that will save lives a fuel rating label will not

I could not agree more. Part worn tyres present more of a danger to car owners than new tyres do, so surely the commission would be best placed targeting those rogues who supply unsafe part worn tyres.
P.S. I’m not saying all part worns are dangerous, but there are some rogue traders out there selling dangerous tyres.

What about the chinese rubbish that will print whatever you want on the label? the labeling system doesn’t work, it’s already been shown there is discepencies between whats on the label and how the tyre actually performs.

I take it we are talking about the labelling on the tyre wall ? £15 is absolute nonsense when manufacturers change design and names/lettering now and again periodically anyway. Also Mr average tyre buyer is governed by his pocket rather than fine detail of the tyres performance . He doesn’t even know about E marking !
Tyre manufacturing in this country is very small now so we will have it whether we like it or not because they are nearly all imported

very few people would understand what they read, some still think you push a button on dash in ice & it stops you skidding , big mistake, all it will do is push prices up, get out of eu NOW, they make rules we stick to & no one else takes notice of it.

Whether we’re in the EU or not is irrelevant. If these changes mean an increase in costs, then we’ll all have to pay more. In or out.

This is the EU forcing this. They’re not about to force partworn legislation as it’s not an EU problem. It’s a UK problem and our lot in Westminster aren’t about to do anything about it. Shame on them.

As an MOT tester I notice that almost ninety percent of new tyres are made outside the UK, with the majority from China. Very few drivers understand the difference between the quality of branded tyres and budget tyres. I agree with Ken that the average motorist is governed by their pocket, and I highly doubt the increase in cost would be £15 when tyres are produced with information already printed on them anyway.

most of these concerns are about “part worn” tyres ,if you look at my webb ,these machines go in the Hi St shops ,and would “stop” the part worn big problems

More EU beauracratic nonsense. If a customer wishes to see the tyre label or ask further details he(she) is at liberty to do so and always has been. Why do we need legislation from those useless idiots in Brussells? They are continually thinking up more complications to justify their existance. The sooner we leave the better!

In the last 6 years of only selling New tyres people only ask two questions how much and oh do you do part worn tyres!!!nobody has ever asked about the the tyre rating

Am I missing something here? Tyres are already labelled with that information as you can see in the photo that is in the article. My understanding is that we should be giving the customer that information anyway. Bit of a misleading article by a journalist who hasn’t done their research I think!
