'Who would have thought an Astra van could do 132mph?' asks Magistrate in court

Technician caught doing 132mph while driving friend to interview
The court was surprised to learn that a Vauxhall Astra van was capable of achieving 132mph.

Daniel Pearson of Grimsby was stopped by police after he was clocked speeding at nearly double the speed limit.

He was driving a black Vauxhall Astra 1.9CDTi van and told police that he was speeding to get his friend to an interview on time.

The court heard that he had already got two lots of three points on his licence in July 2014 and October 2015 and was facing an automatic ban.

Chairman of the bench Shane Bobby told Pearson: “Well who would have thought an Astra van could do 132mph?

“Not me. That’s a fact. Sadly, you have proved that now.”

Defence solicitor Roy Foreman said Pearson would lose his job after taking the vehicle for test drives and MOTs.

Bobby said: “At that speed the police could have charged you with much more serious offences – but they haven’t.

“We must ban you from driving for 56 days.”

Pearson pleaded guilty to one offence of exceeding the speed limit and was fined £300, ordered to pay £85 costs and to pay a £30 victim surcharge.

Speaking outside court Pearson said: “My van was not modified.

“It is a 1.9TDi. I regret doing what I did.

“I am going to have to take the punishment like a man.”
