Caught: Lorry driver found using his phone behind the wheel.

Officers from 28 forces have been using an unmarked lorry to film more than 4,176 examples of dangerous driving relating to 5,039 offences since April 2015.

The elevated position of the cab allows polices to see into other vehicles.

A lorry driver was spotted on his mobile phone and resting his foot on the dashboard while driving on the M18 in Humberside.

Another motorist was found in East Midlands steering with his knees while he ate his lunch and used his phone.

In Surrey, one driver was trying to put toothpaste on a toothbrush while behind the wheel.

Once officers spot the activity, officers in the HGV radio a police car to pull the offending vehicle over.

Almost two thirds of those pulled over were using a mobile while driving.

Other offences included not wearing a seat belt, not being in proper control of the vehicle and speeding.

Highways England, which funded the vehicle, said it would continue to use the truck to catch dangerous drivers.

Highways England’s head of road safety, Richard Leonard said: “The footage of the driver with his foot up on the dashboard is particularly alarming, and I dread to think what would have happened if he had needed to brake suddenly.”
