Traffic officers have issued a warning after they spotted a driver on a grass verge near the M1.

Highways England were initially called out after they received a report of a stranded vehicle this morning on a grass verge of the M1 between J16 for Northampton and J17 for the M45.

Officers said that the vehicle had not broken down – the driver was just tired.

Highways England  tweeted: “Driver advised that Watford Gap is only 3km further ahead where he can stop and nap in a much safer place.”

One in five accidents are caused by tired drivers and one in eight UK drivers say they have fallen asleep at the wheel, according to the AA.
