BMW recall: Everything you need to know

BMW has this week extended a recall of UK cars to cover 312,000 vehicles over fears that they could cut out completely while they are being driven.

The recall covers both petrol and diesel variants of BMW’s 1 series, 3 series, Z4 and X1 models manufactured between March 2007 and August 2011.

The issue concerns the cable connection between the battery and fuse box, which can degrade with heat and wear, potentially causing the engine to cut out.

Symptoms of the problem include a failure to lock the car electronically and flickering lights in the instrument panel.

BMW is sending letters to all potentially affected customers in the next three weeks.

The carmaker has also opened a customer complaints hotline: 0800 083 4397.
