I have to agree with Alan (above) that we have become a throw away society, one which has lent itself to increasing pollution. The production of new cars must surely produce more pollution than the repair and maintenance of existing cars, the logic alone for the production of one part cannot be anywhere near as polluting as a full vehicle.

Also if existing vehicles are so harmful, then why are we not developing a retro fit product to reduce those emissions in the same way we have done for trucks?

Ultimately the motorist is a cash cow and always will be. I also think there is something in the notion that reduced new vehicle production looks politically bad.
