BIG Awards: IGA to give independent garages “well-deserved recognition”

Entrants to face tough auditing process and mystery shops before panel of industry experts make judgement

BIG Awards: IGA to give independent garages “well-deserved recognition”

The British Independent Garage of the Year Awards is being welcomed by the sector as a refreshing and much-needed opportunity to bring widespread recognition to the levels of professionalism, skill, passion and innovation among the UK’s independent garages.

Entries for the inaugural awards, which is being organised by the Independent Garage Association (IGA), are open now with 12 prestigious accolades up for grabs.

The deserving winners are to be announced at an awards ceremony on Friday 19th June 2020 following a thorough auditing process and final judgement from an independent panel of industry experts.

Speaking to GW Views, director of the IGA, Stuart James described how the British Independent Garage of the Year Awards is “setting a new gold standard in vehicle maintenance and repair”.

He said: “This isn’t a half-hearted event, we’ve been planning it for years and the IGA is now in a position to let the world know just how good independent garages are.

“For many years it’s always been other sectors that have had the big award ceremonies and there’s always been a perception that the independents aren’t as important but they are, they’re really very important.

“This is about the independent sector standing up because it’s as good if not better than the rest.”

Entries to the BIG Awards can be made online, where individuals can nominate themselves, their business or another individual or business by submitting a written statement of no more than 1,000 words.

Shortlisting process

Stuart said: “We really want the right garages to win these awards so we won’t be taking the statements on face value.

“We’ll be mystery shopping, auditing and visiting every site that’s shortlisted for each category.

“Any garage that enters really will have to be able to prove their worth.”

Awards ceremony

The BIG Awards ceremony will be hosted by actor and comedian Hugh Dennis.

The ceremony takes place at the Hilton DoubleTree Milton Keynes and is to be hosted by actor and comedian Hugh Dennis, best known for his role as the father in the BBC series Outnumbered, and as a series regular on Mock the Week.

A drinks reception will open the evening ahead the award ceremony itself and a three-course meal, followed by entertainment.

Shortlisted garages will win two free tickets to the event, with additional tickets available to book from £49 + VAT each.

“This is going to be massive”

Stuart added: “The winners will be positioned as leaders in their field and will receive industry-wide press coverage, marketing and business opportunities galore, attracting both new customers and the best talent to their garage.

“If you’ve never entered anything like this before, now is the time to do so.

“This is going to be massive.”
