Air conditioning compressors: GW readers share their views and experiences.

Quality is the most important factor when choosing a replacement air conditioning compressor, according to half of independent garages.

The findings, which were revealed in a recent GW reader survey, showed that price and availability were the next two biggest influences with 21 per cent of independents highlighting each these of aspects as important.

While the majority (79 per cent) claim to only ever replace air conditioning compressors “occasionally”, the remaining say they do so two or three times a month.

More than half of all respondents (52 per cent) noted electrical malfunction as the most common failure for compressors.

Other faults mentioned in the survey results included a clogged filter or a build-up of contaminants in coils, clogged refrigerant lines and, more commonly, too much or too little refrigerant.

81 per cent source their compressors from their local motor factor, while seven per cent use a remanufactures.

Jonathan Walker, managing director of MAHLE Aftermarket UK Ltd, told GW Views: “Many motor factors we work with have fully embraced the quality message and draw comparisons with other components.

“We’ll continue to hammer home the message of quality and we’ll continue to lead the market through our OE expertise, which is translated into our aftermarket offering.”
