Briggate Service Garage, a well-respected workshop in Whittlesey, Peterborough, is set to close its doors after 40 years of operation.
The garage, renowned for its excellent service and dedicated team, has been a cornerstone of the local community.
Owner Paul, who has tirelessly served customers for decades, is now retiring. The closure of the garage has prompted an outpouring of support and appreciation from loyal customers, who have shared their fond memories and gratitude for the exceptional service provided by Paul and his team.
The news of Briggate Service Garage’s closure comes amidst a broader trend of independent garages closing their doors, often due to rising costs, increased competition, changing consumer behaviors or just the value of the land they occupy. This trend is particularly concerning as it can eventually lead to reduced competition, higher prices, and a decline in the quality of service for motorists.
As more and more independent garages close, it’s important that motorists recognise their valuable contribution to local communities. They often provide a personalised service and expertise that larger dealerships simply can’t offer. It’s crucial that motorists support independent businesseses and ensure their continued existence for the benefit of consumers.

With electric vehicles becoming more popular, requiring fewer repairs/servicing I can only see this increasing.

another old school place based on service
sadly many of us are in the same position
the imi which i contacted seem unaware or no idea how bad it is out here trying to recruit new staff and all the costs involved that we have to absorb/pass on to the customer
the whole sector is in trouble and no one is trying to help
thats our experience

Real shame this.
Wonder why the workforce didn’t want to run it as a Co Operative operation?
Did it close due to lack of business, or because the owner wants to sell the land?
Our local Garages in North Wales have never been busier.

As Sn Autohaus traded as a Workshop since 2005 finally closed the shop December 23 due to economic and staffing issues.

SO, the owner is retiring that is the reason for closing the garage nothing to do with the costs. There is a few car and bikes repair centres closing but if operating costs go up put up labour rates and explain to customers why you have had to put prices up and if the dont understand do you want them as customers?? Also what I have noticed is the growing trend of people getting their own parts off the good old web, that’s one thing that could be stopped I am in the motorcycle industry and I avoid fitting “unknown” parts due to some dodgy quality issues that’s one thing I explain

When I get ridiculous hikes in prices on my trade account from suppliers, but a customer tells me he gets it cheaper from “click and collect” from GSF etc…its embarrassing.
Im also seeing more and more people doing their own repairs, with some calling for help when they get stuck…
The cost of living has damaged many areas..
