Air suspension systems offer a significant advancement in automotive comfort and handling compared to traditional coil-spring setups. By using pressurised air chambers, these systems provide a smoother, more adaptable ride.
The core components consist of air struts or air springs, often paired with shock absorbers, located at each corner of the vehicle. These air springs, made of durable rubber and sealed with stainless steel rings, support the vehicle’s weight and are designed to withstand varying conditions. They have an expected lifespan of 6 to 10 years.
A compressor regulates air pressure within the system, with many models including a dryer to remove moisture. When height sensors detect a deviation from the preset ride height, the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) activates the compressor. Air is then directed through a valve block and hoses to the air springs. Systems with a pressure reservoir draw air from this, with the compressor replenishing the stored pressure.
The valve block controls airflow, ensuring each air spring receives the correct air volume. Excess pressure is either released or stored in the reservoir.
The pressure reservoir, usually at the rear, stores compressed air for rapid adjustments, reducing compressor usage and extending its lifespan.
The ECU, the system’s control centre, processes data from height sensors, engine speed, and other inputs to determine air spring adjustments. Electronically controlled shock absorbers also adjust stiffness, stabilising the vehicle without constant air adjustments.
Ride height sensors, located between the axle and chassis, continuously monitor the vehicle’s position, transmitting data to the ECU.
Air suspension offers adjustable ride height, enhanced comfort through reduced noise and vibration, automatic load-levelling, and improved stability and fuel efficiency at high speeds.
