As winter approaches, workshops are gearing up for the usual influx of vehicles requiring winter preparation. While tyre changes and antifreeze checks are common practice, one crucial component is often overlooked: the air suspension system.
Neglecting this system during winter maintenance can lead to costly repairs and compromise driving safety say Arnott. So, incorporating a thorough air suspension check into winter vehicle maintenance is essential to ensure vehicles remain safe and reliable throughout the harsher conditions.
Winter weather, with its freezing temperatures, icy roads, and potential heavy snow, places significant strain on vehicle systems, particularly the air suspension. Components like air springs, compressors, and valves are especially vulnerable to deterioration in cold conditions.
A simple yet effective air suspension check can be performed during a tyre change, when the vehicle’s wheels are already off. This provides an opportune moment to inspect the system for winter-specific issues. The inspection should begin with a conversation with the customer, asking key questions such as: “Has your car sagged more than 2.5 cm overnight?” or “Does one corner of your car appear lower than the rest?” A ‘yes’ to either question indicates a need for deeper inspection.
Inspect the air springs and struts for cracks or signs of wear. Cold weather hardens rubber, potentially leading to suspension failure. It is important to explain to customers that addressing small issues early can prevent more significant problems later.
Check for leaks by spraying a soap-and-water solution on the air springs and connectors. Inspect areas like the folds of the air spring, and check struts and shock absorbers for oil leakage and rust.
Finally, inspect the compressor and hoses, ensuring the compressor is functioning correctly and checking the air hoses for cracks, as damaged hoses can allow dirt and moisture to enter the system, potentially leading to freezing issues.
When carrying out these checks, remember to use “Jack Mode” if available, to prevent air extraction while lifting the car, and avoid depressurising the system, as lowering a car with a depressurised suspension can damage the air bellows. It is also good practice to replace components in pairs to ensure even wear.
Alongside air suspension checks, other essential winter maintenance tasks include fitting winter tyres with adequate tread depth, testing the battery and alternator, inspecting brakes and fluid levels, and ensuring wipers and washer fluid are winter-ready.
