MOT due dates for cars, motorcycles and light vans are to be extended by six months in a bid to help prevent the spread of coronavirus, the DVSA has today announced.

Vehicle owners do not need to do anything to extend the MOT expiry date if it’s on or after 30 March 2020 but they must keep their vehicle in a roadworthy condition.

If a vehicle’s MOT was due to expire on 3 April 2020, this will automatically be extended to 3 October 2020 and the owner will need to get an MOT by this date.

The DVSA is not issuing paper exemption certificates.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said: “We must ensure those on the frontline of helping the nation combat COVID-19 are able to do so.

“Allowing this temporary exemption from vehicle testing will enable vital services such as deliveries to continue, frontline workers to get to work, and people to get essential food and medicine.

“Safety is key, which is why garages will remain open for essential repair work.”

MOTs that run-out before 30 March

If a vehicle’s first MOT was due before 30 March 2020 and it did not pass, it won’t get an extension to its MOT due date.

The DVSA advises owners of vehicles that have run out of MOT while in self-isolation to book an MOT test after their period of self-isolation is over.

Vehicle owners that are extremely vulnerable from coronavirus must not take their vehicle for its MOT.

Those who are not self-isolating may book an MOT at any test centre.

The Department for Transport is working with insurers and the police to ensure owners are not unfairly penalised for not being able to get an MOT.

“Garages are allowed to stay open”

The government is allowing MOT centres and garages to remain open for owners that use their vehicle to shop for basic necessities, for any medical need, or to provide care or to help a vulnerable person and to travel to and from work, but only where this absolutely cannot be done from home.

A spokesperson for the DVSA said: “The government has extended the requirement for certain businesses to close, but garages are allowed to stay open.

“This is to make sure that essential vehicle maintenance and repair to keep vehicles, goods and key workers moving and safe can continue.”

We run a Motorcycle Mot station so this announcement effectively decimated our income for 2020 because if your bike was due to expire for example in June but you now have a six month extension who is going to get their bike mot in December also no mot mean no follow on work . Also our concern is bikes that were given advisories last mot some are not rectified then once they have the next mot are usually failures by then so we are going to end up with some very dangerous bikes on the road this year and as usual the onus is passed onto the owner about the state of the bike he is riding all this on top of no increase in mot price for the last ten years it almost seems like the mot doesn’t matter any more

Failure rates for cars presented for MOT taken as a national average over the last 3 months is 32%.
This means that very nearly a third of all vehicles presented for an MOT test are unable to pass the test and are not roadworthy.
These are vehicles that have in the majority of cases passed an MOT 12 months before, and therefore have become unroadworthy in the period since last tested.
It would therefore be reasonable to expect the vehicles coming in for mot as of the 31st March 2020 would also fail at a similar rate of 32% but now they will be allowed to be used on the public roads for an additional 6 months without compulsory inspection. MADNESS. Who will pick up the pieces when someone is killed as a result of a vehicle being unroadworthy and has not been compulsory tested for nearly 18 months.

It was apparent early on that the industry would be split along two lines: those whom rightly decided to protect their staff and those who just as validly recognised the risk but understood that without some garages very soon vital staff fighting Covid 19 could and would loose mobility. The demand generated from NHS staff alone was never going to result in garages staying open. We needed another valid “essential” revenue stream to generate the compensating volume to allow us to function without government funds. We chose the later and we are one of the last garages operating in our area, 2 miles south of a major trauma hospital. Today we have fixed the car of nurse and two care workers have had their cars MOTed, one required a dangerous coil spring replacing. We have seen demand decimated because of this decision, we close on Tuesday and will seek business support instead. Sorry NHS staff, the DVSA killed your last operating garages off.

HGV operators are being cautioned to increase the frequency of their statutory inspections (in essence an MOT conducted in the private sector (sound familiar?)) to every four weeks to ensure road safety. This precaution is being taken on vehicles that are also checked every day by the operator.

If any person in the UK looses their lives due to failings coming from this decision on extended certificates, Grant Shapps MP and the Minister for Transport and Colin Madodck Head of corporate responsibility at the DVSA should face corporate man slaughter charges. simple: actions have consequences!

And also the number dangerous cars that will be on road in that 6 months
Why not leave the mot system as it is and concentrate on the problem we have the virus
And it’s funny how no b……d mentions anything about the people who created this virus in first place and why did they create it and who it is that wants to destroy thousands of people around the world
Who is responsible for that no monkey mentions that on news
    I wonder why

No not for 6 months will be a killer for thousands of people and what about taxing cars and what about insurance payout incase of accident defect with the car such as a tyre why not leave the mot as it is and concentrate on the problem we have the virus

Typical DVSA double standards, all testers would get penalised for having a tyre depth gauge missing as its ‘an important part of safety’ and yet they’ve deferred mots for 6 months?? If only they saw the death traps we see everyday,it’s frightening and it must be stopped!

We have been told from York council we can not get any rates relief or grants.
I run 2 mot and repair garages with 12 staff.
We closed Thursday night as everyone cancelled for the foreseeable future.
    We are in real trouble.

The Motor trade was already on its knees what with Ultra low emissions, people leasing new cars, the price of parts making cars not cost effective to fix & lets be also frank people do not want to spend money on cars full stop.

The decision for a extension to the MOT in 6 months will mean that there will be garages going out of business & a lot of MOT testers out of work. The authorities have not thought this through properly. If they are relying on people to maintain there cars they are deluded ,the fact is, it is only when the car comes in for MOT that issues are highlighted .They are trusting people to keep on top of there car ,like they are trusting people to stay home . Its a Joke. The days of service & MOT have been over along time ago. The minister of transport , DVSA etc need to rethink this ASAP

Rates relief is for Retail, restaurants, pubs and hospitality. NOT for garages
Agree with other posts re this hasn’t been thought through. MOT’s will now be seasonal. MOT testing stations and MOT testers cannot work 6 months on and 6 months off. So it looks like DVSA is going to be in a spot of bother. MOT testing stations will close and MOT testers will find other jobs. If we lose 50% of stations and testers which is quite feasable, can the DVSA explain how 12 months of MOT tests can be carried out in 6 months with only half the MOT testing stations and half the MOT testers.
Is there any truth in the rumours floating around that this decision was made to protect the MP’s who have links to car manufacturing and main dealers, and not covid-19. Because the main dealers had to close their showrooms, it wasn’t feasable to keep the workshops open, and they got scared about losing their customers to the fast fits and independents. They made a lot of noise and people listened, AT OUR EXPENSE.

This is a ridiculous idea as it has lost a lot of revenue for garages all over the country.
I think they should review their decision or alternatively vehicles that get the automatic six month extension should also only be entitled to a six month MOT rather then a full 12 months.
What are your thoughts on this idea?

In all these comments no one has mentioned the safety of their staff having to get into all those contaminated vehicles not to mention the customers who are supposed to be staying at home. Staff can be furloughed and businesses can claim grants so should be anle to bounce back when all this is behind us. Stay safe and close.

im an mot station and the one thing no one has mentioned is that you can get your car repaired at your local to keep it safe on the road.if you can get your car to a garage for repair to be safe then surely you can get it to an mot station to be certified road legal and safe.

Carry on testing says the DVSA,What planet are they on? Who in their right mind is going to go to the expense of having their vehicle tested and then repaired when they are not required to absolutely no one I would suggest.my bookings have fallen off a cliff since the DVSA announcement and I have no option but to close.the government via the DVSA have no problem cracking the whip at us you will do this you will do that but when we need help what they do is remove all our work/income is this part of some grand plan? Who knows.Mark L

I am interested to learn whether if upon delaying my mot for 6 months the expiry date will be 6 months from the new mot test date of whether it will run for the full 12 months; e.g. MOT due 29th May 2020: Defer until 29th November 2020. Is the renewal due on 29th May 2021 or 29th November 2021?

there will be a huge demand for tests at the end of the six month extension period! Those who are not working have a much reduced car use but those who are working, medical staff etc. are totally reliant on their car to get there. Service and MOT in Glasgow really needs to be done and entrusted in quality assured and reliable hands.
