The Independent Garage Association (IGA) is launching a Covid-19 compliance certification scheme for garages wishing to demonstrate to their customers that the environment is safe.

The scheme, based on the government’s safe working guidelines to prevent coronavirus transmission, will underpin the IGA’s case to overturn the six-month MOT extension by providing evidence that garages are safe places for consumers to visit.

Stuart James, IGA chief executive said: “The IGA is working extremely hard to provide evidence that independent garages have prepared their premises to be safe for customers, so that the MOT extension can be stopped.

“Our aim is to support the government and meet their requirements to bring back the MOT, which will assist with the UK’s economic recovery.”

The new audits will be offered to IGA members at no extra cost and will be carried out by the IGA’s own resources.

Certification will be issued following the audit so garages can create a level of assurance that the environment is safe.

The scheme will be available to IGA members in June.

Just to say thanks to all the hard work you are doing on our behalf, but I don’t understand the government saying they need to work out how to make it safe, how do they think we have been doing MOT test since the lock down, stay open they said to maintain key worker cars how have we managed to do that safely but we are not capable of doing MOT tests safely , and as for worrying about us not being able to cope with the extra work load some one needs to tell him that independent garage owners do not work 9-5 ,
    rant over thanks.

ust to say thanks to all the hard work you are doing on our behalf, but I don’t understand the government saying they need to work out how to make it safe, how do they think we have been doing MOT test since the lock down, stay open they said to maintain key worker cars how have we managed to do that safely but we are not capable of doing MOT tests safely , and as for worrying about us not being able to cope with the extra work load some one needs to tell him that independent garage owners do not work 9-5 I have copied and pasted the last reply having totally agreed with the statement.
We have received a copy of the letter in return from the government and feel that little attention has been paid to our request, with a flowery No given in reply.
We feel that it is quite hypocritical to advise that Mots should not be carried out due to safety for testers and customers, how then is there a difference between the MOT and carrying out all repairs to keep a vehicle safely on the road, none of which makes sense.
There is no difference other than the offices of the DVSA would have to be fully open, and inspections potentially on the road by the DVSA carried out as before COVID 19, along with the chaos when eventually MOTS return that will ensue, to include garages already advertising and devaluing the MOT TO £9.99 OR IN SOME CASES FREE !!!! also are there any inspectors from the IGA carrying out tests for Certification in Wales please?
We would like to say, that without the regular emails supporting us, Independant Garages and Mot Stations would have been left out in the cold, we cannot thank the IGA Enough for the past few months their help has been invaluable.
    kindest regards.
