The Motor Ombudsman New Car Code celebrates 20 years of protecting consumers

The Motor Ombudsman is marking the 20th anniversary of the New Car Code, the first code of its kind to gain full approval from regulators.

Introduced in 2004, the code has become a crucial tool for protecting consumers and ensuring high standards in the sale of new cars.

Currently, 46 carmakers, representing 98% of the UK market, adhere to the code’s guidelines. The code requires manufacturers to use clear language in warranties and marketing materials, provide spare parts readily, and handle customer complaints effectively.

The Motor Ombudsman receives around 11,800 enquiries and 1,200 cases related to the New Car Code annually.

Benefits for Consumers:

  • Clearer communication about warranties and car features.
  • Fair treatment when making complaints.
  • Access to The Motor Ombudsman’s free dispute resolution service in case of unresolved issues.

Benefits for Businesses:

  • Access to a trusted dispute resolution service.
  • Opportunity to showcase their commitment to customer satisfaction.
  • Increased brand exposure through Motor Ombudsman marketing initiatives.

The New Car Code continues to be a vital resource for both consumers and car manufacturers, ensuring a fair and transparent buying experience for new cars.
