Autoelectro highlights common causes of modern alternator failure

Rotating electrics remanufacturer Autoelectro has identified communication faults, clutch pulley failures, and a lack of software updates as frequent reasons for alternator failure in modern vehicles. With nearly four decades of experience, Autoelectro shares technical knowledge to benefit motor factors and technicians.

To prevent recurring issues, specific part numbers are supplied with advisory warning notices addressing root causes. Autoelectro’s engineers analyse returned units to identify common fault patterns. Harnek Bhogal notes that these part-specific warnings aim to prevent the same faults in supplied units.

Examples of common alternator issues highlighted by Autoelectro include:

For Ford Fiesta and Mazda 2 1.4 models (2003-onwards) using a three-pin ECU-controlled alternator (Ford Smart Charge), a warning advises of a potential 3.5A discharge fault if a standard lead-acid battery is fitted instead of the recommended silver calcium type.

For Honda Civic, CR-V, and Accord 2.2-2.4 models (2006-onwards), clutch pulley failure is a common reason for returns. The advisory note recommends fitting a replacement belt and removing the guide pulley to reduce stress on the clutch pulley.

For Peugeot Partner, 208, 3008, 5008, and Citroën Berlingo, DS3, C3, C4 1.6 diesel models (2010-onwards) with iStARS alternators, the packaging advises mandatory fitting with an AGM battery.

For Audi A6, A7, A8, SQ5, SQ7, Q8 3.0 diesel MHEV models (2019-onwards) using a genuine OE 48V MHEV Belted Starter Generator (BSG), Autoelectro advises ensuring the vehicle software is up-to-date before installation to prevent communication and charging issues.
