Ford Transit Custom 2.0 diesel alternators in ‘high demand’

Workshops turn to Autoelectro in time of need as main dealers remain closed

Ford Transit Custom 2.0 diesel alternators in ‘high demand’

Demand is surging for Ford Transit Custom 2.0 diesel alternators (2016 onwards) as independent garages continue to service the vehicles of key workers during the UK’s current lockdown status.

With main dealer parts stores still closed and garage businesses encouraged to remain open to service the needs of vehicles required for essential travel, rotating electrics remanufacturer and supplier, Autoelectro has reported a significant increase in sales of its AEG1472 Ford Transit Custom 2.0 diesel alternator which remains available from stock.

Autoelectro’s Paul Bhogal said: “Whilst the main dealers have been closed we’ve noticed that these alternators are in particularly high demand.

“Four years on a commercial vehicle is a lifetime and the alternators on these Transit Customs are simply getting worn out due to wear and tear.”

“We’re usually the first to market”

The AEG1472 alternator for the 2.0 diesel Ford Transit Custom was made available from Autoelectro just two years after the vehicle’s launch, dispelling the myth that alternators for newer vehicles are only available from main dealers.

“As a vehicle gets older availability in the aftermarket gets better but we’re usually the first to market, as this part number demonstrates perfectly well,” Paul explained.

Other commercial vehicle alternators which have seen a recent surge in demand include those for the Citroen Relay 2.0HDI Diesel (2015 onwards) and Peugeot Boxer 2.0HDI Diesel (2015 onwards).

Autoelectro can also facilitate uprated versions of these alternators for use on emergency vehicles which require higher amperage to support the extra load on blue-light vehicles.

Alternators are not covered under the vehicle manufacturer’s warranty and main dealer replacement can be expensive, with Autoelectro research suggesting significant dealership pricing variations across the UK.

Alternator remanufacturing

Autoelectro alternators are supplied to garages on an exchange basis.

With more than 30 years’ experience and knowledge, Autoelectro is thought to be the largest independent rotating electrics remanufacturer and supplier in the UK.

It stocks thousands of starter motors and alternators for immediate delivery covering a wide range of commercial and passenger car vehicles.

Autoelectro’s remanufacturing process starts with a complete strip down of the old core unit in preparation for degreasing, blasting and steam cleaning.

Brand new components

Consumable items, including regulators and pulleys, are scrapped and replaced with brand new components.

Aluminium casings and brackets found to be in good order are blasted and prepared for reuse, electrical windings are tested and re-insulated, and the rotors prepared with new slip rings and tested.

The unit is then reassembled and tested once more on state-of-the-art DV test benches.

All Autoelectro parts are packed with a unique identifying serial number and boxed into stock.
