Thousands of enthusiastic youth academics across the country embarked on a journey to WorldSkills UK Live in November – the UK’s largest careers event developed to showcase a wide variety of available professions.

Automotive pathways included apprenticeships with top manufacturers like BMW and Land Rover, automotive repair, design and finishing.

During the show, WorldSkills UK Live hosted the annual IMI Skills Auto Careers Competition, developed to test and acknowledge the abilities of youth automotive students across the UK.

From the start of the year, hundreds of youth applicants have undergone rigorous testing in hope of becoming the UK’s 2018 champion in one of 4 streams; Auto Refinishing, Auto Technology, Heavy Vehicle Technology or Auto Body Repair.

The first round at the start of 2018 saw applicants undergo an online written aptitude test for their chosen stream. Successful applicants were invited to regional heats across the country.

Winning on a points-based system, semi-final regional heat winners were invited to the live finals at the WorldSkills UK Live exhibition on 6th – 7th November.

During the two-day show, the finalists were tested with three 2-hour practical tests on both days.

During each test, youth finalists were marked using the point-based system on their ability to appropriately diagnose, solve and fix cars.

Tests provided were varied and included a Ferrari that required competitors to analyse, test and fix wheel alignment issues, identifying engine faults using diagnostic equipment, and electrical faults on a vehicle.

An Autologic spokesperson said: “Autologic were proud to sponsor the competition by providing youth competitors with not only the use of an AssistPlus diagnostic system throughout the competition, but also with training to ensure AssistPlus could be used to its full capability across the two-days.

“The training provided competitors with an essential product insight for the competition and also valuable diagnostic equipment knowledge for them to take forward in their automotive careers.”
