BG Products has released details of a case in which the overall performance of a BMW MINI was restored thanks to its popular Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) two-part cleaning process.

Due to the positioning of the injectors in the cylinder the valves in GDI engines are susceptible to carbon build up.

BG Products said: “The carbon deposits form on and around the injector tip, deforming the spray pattern.

“This causes the fuel to ignite prematurely, and can produce a pinging or knocking sound.

“If left unchecked, these deposits begin to form around the valves themselves, causing a damaging effect to the vehicle’s fuel economy and overall performance.”

The first part of the cleaning process uses BG271, which is designed to soak into the carbon to soften it in preparation for its removal.

The second part, BG272 is then used to flush out and rinse the carbon off of the valves.

BG Products cite a case where a MINI 1.6 turbo was originally quoted 13 hours labour to perform an engine strip down and clean.

Thanks to BG treatment, the cleaning process took just 30 minutes with the use of BG206 and BG211, which were injected into the engine using the BG VIA tool.
