MOT stations warned of underhand tactics used by suppliers to sell smoke meters
Boston has confirmed that all Boston Garage Equipment units currently in use can be updated on-site and that there is no need to purchase new equipment.

Reports have surfaced of some sales representatives wrongly informing MOT stations that they need to buy replacement smoke meters before May 2018.

Boston Garage Equipment say reports of unscrupulous tactics came to light following DVSA announcements that all smoke meters and gas analysers used for MOT testing will need updating on or before May 20th 2018.

The new updates bring into force Euro 6 compatible emission standards for smoke meters and the new 19th edition gas analyser vehicle database.

Updates available

A spokesperson at Boston Garage Equipment told GW: “Whilst it is true that some existing models may need to be replaced, the vast majority can be updated meaning that new equipment is not required.

“The Garage Equipment Association is aware of this matter after receiving complaints and is asking for information concerning such practices.

“We can confirm that all Boston Garage Equipment units currently in use can be updated on-site and there is no need to purchase new equipment.

“MOT premises using other models should check directly with their equipment manufacturer to establish whether their diesel smoke meter is capable of being updated.”

All Boston models can be updated.

Test stations are advised to check their position without delay and place orders soon for a new smoke meter only if necessary.
