Brake Engineering finds significant defects in new aftermarket calipers

Independent study raises concerns over brake caliper quality

An independent study commissioned by Brake Engineering has raised concerns about the quality of brake calipers entering the aftermarket.

The study evaluated three new brands of calipers, comparing them to original equipment manufacturer (OEM) standards. All three failed to meet critical tolerances, with a total of 29 structural and mechanical defects identified.

Key issues:

  • Lower-grade materials were used in the caliper construction.
  • Porosities (holes) and oxides were found in the material, potentially leading to weakening.
  • The calipers failed to meet OEM standards for normal lifecycle operation.
  • Defects could result in increased vibrations, noise, inconsistent pedal feel, and potentially catastrophic brake failure.

Brake Engineering emphasises the safety-critical nature of brake callipers and the potential consequences of using substandard components.

Mark Hallam, Brake Engineering Marketing Manager, said: “The results of the independent test are alarming for the aftermarket, especially following the trade’s successful MOT campaign to maintain safety standards. Calipers entering the market may appear fit for purpose. However, their performance has been found to be severely questionable with structures potentially leading to catastrophic failure.”
