The cloud has received a bit of bad press recently, notably from high-profile hacking of sites in recent years, Alex Knight hopes to dispel some myths and prove it’s not scary, expensive or unsafe.

On the contrary it’s an exciting, affordable and super secure world; so secure in fact that the government are increasingly moving motor services to the cloud, from car tax to the new MOT testing service rolling out right now across testing stations.

So it’s safe and stable enough that our government are using it, and what’s more you are too.

Every time you go on to Gmail, Office 365 or Dropbox you’re using a cloud application; don’t get bamboozled by terminology, for cloud-based apps you can just read ‘works in your web browser’.

Flexibility

Software suppliers can now build apps that offer a consistent user experience and are accessible anywhere in the world, without needing to build expensive datacentres or that require certain computer hardware for users.

For workshops and garages, it removes the reliance and worry of managing your IT.

The suppliers handle that, so there’s no need to maintain and update your computer hardware other than making it web accessible. After all, you should be fixing cars, not computers.

Money saver

Cloud apps can work equally well on mobile and tablet as on desktop computers, which means you can work more flexibly in terms of where, when and how you manage your workshop.

Perhaps most importantly, without the high IT up-front and support costs, using the cloud can vitally also save your garage money.

There’s no financial gamble when investing in a new system; most work on a flexible pay as you go basis with a free version to try out before you buy so the risk is greatly reduced to your business.
