Opinion: It’s not the end of the line for petrol and diesel

Internal combustion engine will be around for "at least the next two decades", Carwood suggests

Opinion: It’s not the end of the line for petrol and diesel

The traditional combustion engine still has “plenty more miles left in the tank”, Carwood has said in a statement which puts the recently confirmed 2030 petrol and diesel ban into context for garages.

The remanufacturer of diesel fuel injection systems, turbochargers, engines and rotating electrics has welcomed plans to allow new hybrid vehicles until 2035.

A Carwood spokesperson said: “This means that the internal combustion engine (ICE) will still be very much part of the future, even if the ban on new, fully powered diesel and petrol cars and vans is implemented.

“We say if, because there are still huge barriers to overcome before electric vehicles can and will be adopted mainstream.

“Factors such as new vehicle cost, driving range and charging times all need to be addressed, and the technology change will need to be supported by sufficient charging infrastructure country wide.”

The automotive brand also points to stats which suggest consumers are still reluctant to switch to an EV.

The spokesperson added: “When you factor in the millions of diesel powered vehicles, including light, heavy and off-highway, that will be added between now and 2030, and even beyond as part of a hybrid solution, it’s clear that there will be a significant diesel service opportunity for at least the next two decades.

“Some predict 2050.

“The same goes for their petrol counterparts.

“So, whilst we acknowledge that internal combustion will eventually stop becoming the default option, this does not mean the immediate end of diesel or petrol – far from it.”

Carwood supplies a full line up of OEM-approved, remanufactured diesel fuel injection components and turbochargers for the UK’s automotive aftermarket.
