Castrol expands EV fluid range with new wet E-motor options

Castrol has launched two new transmission fluids specifically designed for electric vehicles with wet e-motors. Castrol ON EV Transmission Fluid W2 and W5 are formulated to deliver low electrical conductivity, helping the motor run cooler and more efficiently.

These low-viscosity fluids are extensively tested to handle the high torque outputs of electric motors. W2 is compatible with MG’s HS Plug-in Hybrid and ZS EV, while W5 finds application in BYD’s Seal saloon and upcoming Seal U DM-I Plug-in Hybrid SUV. Additionally, W5 is suitable for BYD models with dry e-motors, such as the Atto 3 and Dolphin.

Paul Beasley, Expert Technologist – Driveline and EV Aftermarket Product Development at Castrol, said: “The introduction of these new fluids is the culmination of detailed research and cooperative efforts with MG, BYD, and our suppliers. The ability to be compatible with the wide array of materials and electrical components present in the motor, which contrasts with conventional transmission fluids that may provoke corrosion and damage, is critical. These two new Castrol ON Transmission Fluids harness cutting-edge technology to excel within the transmission while also delivering protection for the motor.”

This launch follows the introduction of Castrol ON EV Transmission Fluids D1 and D2 in 2022, targeting EVs with dry e-motors. D1 is compatible with Hyundai and Kia models like the Kona Electric, and D2 works with Volkswagen Group vehicles on the MEB platform, including the ID.3 and Škoda Enyaq.

Castrol’s commitment to EV technology is evident, with three out of four major car manufacturers using their EV fluids for factory fill. Castrol ON Wet Transmission EV Fluid W2 and W5 are available in five-litre packs for workshops starting from August.
