Castrol is set to host “Hybrid Horizons,” a virtual conference focusing on the future of hybrid vehicles. This free-to-join event will take place from 25 February to 1 March, 2025, and will feature insights from leading figures in the automotive industry.
The conference aims to connect a wide range of participants, from workshop owners to car manufacturers, by sharing knowledge and expertise on how to drive hybrid mobility forward.
The conference will kick off with a live session hosted at Audi’s Formula 1 facility in Germany. Participants will then have access to a variety of on-demand content, including panel discussions, round tables, and market insights, allowing them to create a personalised “playlist” of sessions most relevant to their interests.

The conference aligns with Castrol’s global strategy for developing hybrid-specific products. In 2023, the company launched HYSPEC, a new technical standard for its hybrid engine oils. HYSPEC measures performance in three key areas: contaminants, engine intermittency, and system efficiency.
The virtual conference will be divided into four zones: Insight, Innovation, Tech, and Motorsport. Some of the confirmed topics include:
- A behind-the-scenes look at Audi’s Formula 1 power unit development.
- The impact of changing regulations on the future of hybrid technology.
- Utilising social media to educate consumers about hybrid vehicles.
- How Gen Z and women view the future of mobility.
Castrol’s HYSPEC standard is based on over 25 years of research and development, including a year-long road trial involving various hybrid vehicles. The company also collaborated with car manufacturers and motorsport teams to develop the standard.
With the hybrid vehicle market expected to account for a quarter of global car sales by 2025, Castrol’s HYSPEC standard aims to help both workshops and consumers choose the right engine oil for hybrid cars.
Engine oils with the HYSPEC logo demonstrate at least a 25% benefit in contaminant control, engine intermittency protection, and system efficiency compared to the HYSPEC standard.
Hybrid engines present unique challenges for engine oil due to the constant switching between electric and combustion power sources. These challenges include:
- Increased contamination due to cooler engine temperatures.
- Reduced performance and protection from engine start-stop cycles.
- Decreased system efficiency caused by cooler running temperatures.
Castrol’s HYSPEC engine oils are formulated to address these challenges and ensure optimal performance in hybrid vehicles.
