The six-month exemption from MOT testing on all cars, vans and motorcycles will come as welcome news for both vehicle owners and garages around the country who have been waiting for clarification, Crypton has said.
Legislation, which will be introduced on March 30, means that any vehicle requiring an MOT in the following 12 months will automatically be granted a six-month exemption, reducing pressure on the public and enabling essential travel to continue during the coronavirus outbreak.
However, drivers must ensure that their vehicles remain in a good condition during this time, with garages currently remaining open for essential repair work.

Debbie Dunbar, marketing manager at Crypton, said: “Following the government’s guidance will be crucial to ensure the industry can bounce back to full capacity once normality resumes.
“In these unprecedented times, now more than ever before, responsibility will fall to vehicle owners to ensure that vehicles are kept in a roadworthy condition and health and safety remains a priority.
“While there is no denying that the temporary exemption is positive news, with global supply chains under increasing pressure and service requirements expected to peak once the lock down is lifted, it may be wise for garages to begin to prepare now, for example by sensibly sourcing common MOT parts, for a likely increase in demand in future months.”
