A 19-year-old apprentice mechanic, Owen Lloyd, has become the UK’s youngest qualified electric vehicle (EV) technician after completing the IMI Level 3 qualification at Delphi Academy.
Owen, who works at Oldfields Garage in Leominster, achieved this milestone before finishing his apprenticeship. He sees EV training as crucial for the future of the industry and a significant advantage for his career.
“I want to stay up-to-date, and EVs are becoming increasingly important,” said Owen. “Not many garages have EV qualifications, so having this gives me a big edge.”
Delphi Academy’s comprehensive EV training course equips technicians with the knowledge and skills to diagnose, repair, and maintain EVs safely. The course includes online pre-learning and combines theory with practical instruction.
Both Owen’s trainer and his employer at Oldfields Garage acknowledge his dedication and hard work. “Completing this qualification at such a young age is a testament to Owen’s commitment,” said Luke Garratt of Delphi Academy.
Tim, from Oldfields Garage, emphasises the importance of EV training for independent garages. “We’re now in the process of ensuring our current customers know that we’re EV qualified and that it’s part of our core offering, not just an afterthought,” said Tim. “EV training is a key first step for independent garages. The next step, is ensuring our loyal customers know we can continue to service them, should their next car be an EV.”
The garage is now actively promoting its EV qualifications to its existing customer base. Tim believes this is a crucial step in ensuring Oldfields can continue serving its customers as the automotive industry shifts towards EVs.
