Easy2Recruit urges new Home Secretary to address sector skills crisis

Advocating for inclusion of mechanics on Immigration Salary List to tackle workforce shortage

Easy2Recruit urges new Home Secretary to address sector skills crisis

Easy2Recruit, the agency specialising in helping garages hire overseas talent, has penned a letter to the new Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper, urging swift action to combat the burgeoning skills crisis in the garage sector. Proposing that mechanics should be added to the Immigration Salary List.

The garage industry finds itself in a tight spot. A predicted shortfall of 160,000 workers looms over the automotive sector within the next decade, with vehicle technician roles among the most affected. Recent data from the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) reveals that job vacancies in the motor trade are at a 21-year high, with only accommodation and food services surpassing the demand.

Easy2Recruit’s founder, Ambi Singh, isn’t one to twiddle spanners idly. Back in 2024, he petitioned the previous Home Secretary to include SOC Code 5321 (encompassing Vehicle Technicians, Mechanics, and Electricians) in the Shortage Occupation List. Now, he’s doubling down, requesting the immediate addition of SOC Code 5321 and SOC Code 5232 (Vehicle Bodyshop Technicians) to the Immigration Salary List.

“The ongoing staffing shortfall is set to grow, and this will prevent the UK automotive industry from functioning effectively,” said Ambi, “especially as we move towards sustainable and electric vehicles. If mechanics are added to the Immigration Salary List now, garages won’t grind to a halt later.”
