Ecobat Battery has completed the second phase of a large-scale infrastructure project at a 404-megawatt combined gas turbine power station for National Grid Ireland.
The project, conducted at Energia’s Huntstown power station during a planned maintenance closure, required the removal of old batteries and the installation of over 200 new 2,190Ah batteries, each weighing 160 kilogrammes.
The project, which began on 7 October, had to be completed within a strict two-week timeframe. The installation posed logistical challenges due to the batteries’ weight and the second-floor location, accessible only via an external staircase.
Ecobat Battery selected Sonnenschein A602/2200HB batteries for the project. The company collaborated with Mastiff Engineering, who supplied and operated a spider crane to remove the spent batteries and lift the new ones.
The project involved transferring approximately 140 tonnes of batteries over two phases. The internal access route was deemed unsafe due to its location above a turbine, making the external access the only viable option.
