Ecobat Battery has provided a practical solution to a challenge faced by the Stapleford Miniature Railway (SMR), which raises funds for LOROS (the Leicestershire and Rutland Organisation for the Relief of Suffering).
The SMR, maintained by the Friends of the Stapleford Miniature Railway (FSMR), a voluntary body working with the Gretton Family, operates for occasional public and private events, with proceeds donated to charity.
The FSMR has supported LOROS since the railway’s reopening in 1995. Fundraising efforts include two annual public events and other initiatives, such as occasional “great train robberies” during private invitation days. Jennifer Lady Gretton, President of the FSMR, is also the current President of LOROS.
Mark Allsopp of Ecobat Battery, who is also involved with the FSMR, identified an opportunity for Ecobat Battery to assist the railway’s volunteers. The braking system for the railway’s coaches had been powered by three heavy lead acid batteries, which were becoming difficult for the volunteers to lift for charging and maintenance.
Ecobat Battery donated three of its own brand lithium EBL100 batteries as a solution. These batteries are approximately half the weight of the previous lead acid batteries, resolving the lifting issue. Additionally, their longer lifespan provides a more sustainable, long-term solution.
This contribution from Ecobat Battery alleviates a practical concern for the team responsible for the railway’s operation, allowing the FSMR to continue its fundraising efforts for LOROS. The FSMR has already donated a significant sum of £109,000 to the charity.
The Stapleford Miniature Railway is open to the public on 14th & 15th June, 26th & 27th July, and 23rd & 24th August. Full details are available on the organisation’s website: www.fsmr.co.uk.
