LKQ Academy has partnered with battery manufacturer VARTA to launch a new course on servicing batteries for hybrid, electric, and hydrogen vehicles. This course is designed to equip technicians and other garage staff with the knowledge and skills needed to maintain the 12-volt battery, a critical component in the performance of these vehicles.
The demand for training in servicing electric and hybrid vehicles is on the rise. According to GIPA data, nearly 30% of workshops identified this as their top training priority in 2024. This new course from LKQ Academy addresses this need by providing participants with:
- An understanding of battery technology and quality control practices used by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
- Knowledge of how vehicle manufacturers utilise Intelligent Battery Sensors (IBS) for battery management.
- Guidance on testing 12-volt batteries and interpreting the results accurately.
LKQ Academy’s partnership with VARTA reflects its ongoing commitment to supporting the independent aftermarket. In 2024, the company expanded its reach to over 21,000 registered technicians and opened new training facilities in key locations across the UK.
“Battery health plays a crucial role in vehicle performance, but it’s often overlooked,” says Lee Chapman, Head of Support and LKQ Academy. “As the adoption of hybrid, electric, and hydrogen vehicles continues to grow, it’s essential that technicians can diagnose and service battery-related issues.”
“A low-voltage battery’s performance degrades over time, making it a ‘living component,'” explains Andy Cook, Key Account Manager at VARTA. “Technicians who lack the skills to identify potential battery problems risk sending vehicles on the road with performance issues. Through this training course, we aim to equip technicians with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in the evolving automotive landscape.”
This new course with VARTA is just one of several initiatives undertaken by LKQ Academy in 2025. The company has also partnered with Autowave for additional training programs and expanded its collaboration with The Garage Inspector to offer specialised training to its customers.
