LKQ Academy has launched a new course designed to equip technicians with the skills needed to service hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles. This addition bolsters their existing electric and hybrid vehicle training, further preparing garages for a future powered by clean energy alternatives.
The “Hydrogen Vehicle Safety Awareness Certification” offers a one-day program focusing on safe handling procedures, potential risks, and essential precautions when servicing these vehicles. This IMI-approved qualification fills a crucial gap as hydrogen vehicles could begin to join electric cars on UK roads in the run-up to the ban on internal combustion engines (ICEs).
This initiative builds on LKQ Academy’s commitment to a sustainable future in the automotive industry. They’ve already upskilled over 3,000 technicians in hybrid and electric vehicle maintenance, with more than 20,000 registered users. Additionally, they’ve introduced a separate course targeting AdBlue system faults.
Lee Chapman, head of support & LKQ Academy at LKQ Euro Car Parts said: “The refining and transmission of green hydrogen is rapidly developing, creating more opportunities to expand refuelling infrastructure. Carmakers are also planning to bring forward new hydrogen models in the next few years, alongside electric releases, to meet the needs of a decarbonised car parc.
“While there’s strong consensus that the future of emission-free vehicles will be largely electric, hydrogen still has an important role to play as part of the net-zero fuel mix. Launching a hydrogen dedicated course expands on our support to futureproof skills in the aftermarket, while creating an opportunity for garages to build a valuable specialism.”
LKQ Academy is also undergoing significant expansion. Plans include opening 10 new UK training centers, adding to their existing facilities across the UK, with an Academy in Tamworth about to open, as well as new sites in Glasgow and Manchester already added; this is on top of external partnerships. To support this growth, they’ve recruited new instructors and secured a three-year exclusive training collaboration with Andy Savva, The Garage Inspector.
