Caution must be exercised when it comes to rubber-metal parts, according to Febi which has said a bush cross section can reveal that OE similarities are only skin deep.
Febi claim some suppliers rely on a solid rubber core that does not have the precise vibration, noise reducing or elastokinematic potential of hydro-mounts, which can lead to transferring vibrations to the surrounding chassis components.
A Febi spokesperson said: “If a rigid mount is fitted instead of a hydro-mount, the effect desired by the manufacturer, e.g. a change in the toe-in on braking, is significantly reduced.
“This can increase the likelihood of an accident as the desired control is reduced.
Vehicle safety
“Damaged rubber metal parts can lead to uneven tyre wear, reduced stability and excess movement of steering components.
“With such an important role to play in vehicle safety, it is crucial that the highest quality rubber metal parts are used in your vehicle, to ensure high performance and avoid premature wear.”
Febi supplies a range of over 2,000 rubber metal parts for a variety of makes and models, servicing millions of vehicles on UK roads.
The spokesperson added: “Rubber-metal parts have to dampen vibrations and absorb bumps on uneven road surfaces.
“They help to maintain proper alignment and drive torque, whilst making a significant contribution to increasing driving comfort and noise insulation.
“Rubber metal components are crucial for adding support and protection to many safety critical components.
“And with the increasing complexity of vehicle chassis’, it is vital that the quality of rubber metal parts comes under closer scrutiny.”
