One million transactions reveal repair insights with Garage Hive Garage Industry Trends

A real-time data platform, Garage Industry Trends from Garage Hive, has surpassed one million transactions logged by independent garages across the UK. This milestone provides valuable insights into workshop performance and repair trends.

The platform, launched in September 2022, anonymously collects data from participating workshops. This data is then used to calculate industry averages for labour rates, invoice values, and customer satisfaction (NPS). It also tracks trends in repair demand based on vehicle age and fuel type.

“Reaching one million transactions is a significant moment for us,” said Alex Lindley, Director of Garage Hive. “We now have over two years of data from Garage Hive workshops that have voluntarily shared their business metrics to benefit the industry. This freely available data from Garage Industry Trends provides valuable benchmarks, helping owners and managers evaluate their performance and make informed decisions.”

Over 175 workshops have contributed to the platform, providing valuable insights into the UK garage industry. Here are some key findings:

  • Labour Rates: The average labour rate rose by 2.5% in 2024, from £74.04 to £75.87. Scotland has the highest average rate (£82.04), followed by England (£77.66) and Wales (£69.43).
  • Invoice Values: The average invoice value grew by 5.3% in 2024, reaching £300. Diesel vehicles have the highest average invoice value (£342.61), while EVs are lower (£227.84).
  • Repair Trends by Age: Interestingly, the data reveals a more nuanced picture when broken down by vehicle age. For newer vehicles (less than five years old), diesel commands a higher invoice value (£357.48) compared to EVs (£186.69). However, for older vehicles (more than five years old), EVs have the highest average invoice value (£342.43) compared to petrol cars (£254.64).

“These figures suggest that EV ownership is notably cost-effective during the first five years of ownership but becomes more expensive as vehicles age,” said Alex. “It will be fascinating to track how these trends evolve over time.”

Garage Industry Trends is a free resource for all independent workshops in the UK. The platform provides actionable insights to help businesses improve efficiency and profitability.
