Component failure and essential diagnostic tips highlighted by technical support team in latest online training

Gates webinar solves problems with modular cooling system hoses

The latest Gates technical webinar has covered modular cooling system hoses.

Participants included mechanics who were keen to improve their diagnostic skills and counter staff from distributors who wanted to increase their ability to provide technical support.

The webinar, attended by English speaking mechanics from a range of European countries, began by defining the nature of modular coolant hoses and their developing role in modern cooling systems.

Some of the latest modular hoses appear more complex than those of earlier generations, but installation is often straightforward.

New materials are being used in hose construction.

The incorporation of additional components such as sensors and the employment of different types of connectors that reduce weight, improve fitting efficiency and provide optimal sealing qualities, have increased the level of technical awareness required by installers.

Gates has a rapidly expanding range of hoses for cooling systems.

New modular branched hoses were a significant element of over 1500 extra hose part numbers added during the last year.

The webinar included specific details about modular cooling system hoses that are beginning to fail for various reasons in a number of different applications.

For example, water leaks in modular coolant hoses on a range of vehicles fitted with the same 1.6 diesel PSA engine were identified as taking place soon after a scheduled timing belt change plus a water pump replacement.

The cause was a split in the hose, caused during water pump removal/installation.

After identifying this particular cause, Gates introduced a new modular coolant hose solution (Gates part number 02-1730).

It was made clear that some modular cooling system hose failures arise from the use of different plastic materials that had become brittle with age.

Other causes of failure include continual expansion and contraction of hose connectors.
