ADAS is becoming ever-more complicated, warns HELLA

As advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) now use both camera and radar technology, workshops need to be aware that with every new model, these systems are becoming ever more complex.

This needs to be understood by the technicians responsible for ADAS recalibration in order for them to perform the process efficiently and correctly, according to HELLA.

Crucially, they also need to have the appropriate tools to enable them to undertake it successfully.

If an ADAS equipped vehicle needs collision repair work, windscreen replacement, wheel or geometry adjustment, the addition of ride-height-altering components to the suspension system or just a standard service task that requires the removal of the front bumper/headlight carrier assembly, such as a timing belt replacement on a longitudinal mounted engine, it will need to have the system recalibrated once the repair is complete.

Vitally important calibration

Neil Hilton, HGS’s head of business development, said: “If a technician carries out repair work, such as strut replacement, it is vital that ADAS recalibration is performed, because in this instance, camera/radar sensors will be affected by the work.

“If it is not recalibrated, this may cause danger to the driver and other road users, as the system’s viewpoint will change and become unreliable to use safely.”

Hella Gutmann Solutions (HGS) has pioneered the equipment necessary to enable technicians to undertake ADAS recalibration with confidence, even on the most advanced of vehicles.

When it comes to the latest radar systems for example, HGS has developed equipment such as its CSC Radar EVO, which alongside the original CSC-Tool, is specifically designed for radar-based ADAS.

The Radar EVO has been designed to have extensive vertical adjustment range to deal with the wide variety of radar sensor mounting positions and further futureproofs the HGS calibration equipment.

CSC Kit Radar II includes a mirror adjustment device with vacuum bell, l centering rings, a manual vacuum pump and adjustment tools, and caters for Mercedes-Benz vehicles equipped with variant three radar sensors.

Alongside the renowned and market leading CSC Tool, these radar kits allow workshops to provide the complete calibration solution on the vast majority of ADAS equipped vehicles and therefore ensures the workshop remains competitive and competent.

Neil added: “We offer the most comprehensive ADAS calibration tools available to the aftermarket and have been pioneering this industry for decades, meaning that we understand the technology and can provide independents with the best means to ensure driver safety.

“With ADAS features growing at a rapid rate and as more vehicles have the technology fitted as standard, workshops need to continue to invest in the tools that will recalibrate the systems correctly, which is why we’re investing in creating and developing them in order to provide workshops with a competitive edge in the marketplace.”
