Lucas Oil advises on fuel and oil 'stabilizer' additives

How to avoid problem re-starts after lockdowns and seasonal lay-ups

More cars than ever will be laid up for longer periods this winter, but there are things all drivers can do to avoid unnecessary problems when they re-start their engines, Lucas Oil says.

Apart from offering the usual winter checks, the lubricant firm suggests garages can take the opportunity to advise drivers about preventive maintenance inside their fuel tanks and oil systems.

Fuel systems

The octane level in fuel declines quickly.

Re-starting can become a problem, but additive technology makes draining the tank unnecessary.

When the National Motor Museum re-opens its doors after the latest lockdown, a fuel stabilizer additive donated by Lucas Oil will have preserved the octane levels in all of its road-going cars.

“It’s standard procedure here, to use Lucas Oil’s Fuel Stabilizer in any car that’s likely to have fuel inside it for a month or more.

SWe also use it in any vehicle where we think residual fuel is likely to remain,” said museum manager and chief engineer Doug Hill.

“Despite the best efforts made, there is always a possibility that residual fuel remains in vehicle fuel systems after draining, particularly in some of the more modern fuel injection systems.”

Oil systems

After a lay-up, dry starts are the key cause of engine damage, according to Dan Morgan, Lucas Oil’s sales and operations director.

He said: “Dry starts are caused when oil drains down into the sump during lay-ups of any kind.

“Lucas Oil heavy duty oil stabilizer is an oil additive that prevents engine damage by leaving a thin film of protection over every moving part, long after the oil has drained away.

“It’s a product that also reduces friction and operating temperatures at the same time.

“So as well as protecting the engine in lockdowns and lay-ups, it helps to increase the operational life of the engine oil and protects the engine for longer.”
